Everybody knows that the Internet can be a dangerous place for both personal and professional users alike, making security more than necessary. Not only is cyber crime fast becoming more profitable than even illegal drug trade around the world, but 230 new malware samples are produced every single day – a trend that shows absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
But maybe the most damning thing of all is the fact that the vast majority of all content sent over the Internet isn’t actually secure in the first place.
We’ve reached an era where a true proactive approach to cyber security is not longer a recommendation, but a requirement. Luckily, Filestack has a variety of security solutions aimed at protecting your critical app content that will help you do precisely that. While a website has several different gateways through which malicious programs can enter, Filestack protects one of the most critical – the “upload” gateway – through a robust array of security and virus scanning techniques that take place whenever data is uploaded into your application.
Filestack Security Solutions: Breaking Things Down
There are two main ways that Filestack actively works to keep your data safe. One of them is Filestack Virus Detection, which itself is a native part of the Filestack Workflows suite. Not only is it built to screen individual files for viruses, malware and other types of potentially malicious or rogue programs, but when threats are spotted Filestack can quarantine them before they get anywhere near your system.
But again – virus detection of any kind is just one small part of a much larger story. For true end-to-end protection, you need to go a fair bit deeper. Luckily, that’s exactly what Filestack was designed to do.
To create an environment for the most secure upload possible, Filestack employs state-of-the-art encryption at all points of the secure file transfer process. Even while a file is sitting idle on your server, it’s still totally protected against individuals with malicious intentions. Secure document upload encryption also makes sure that even if someone did intercept a file, they wouldn’t be able to access the essential information contained inside without the appropriate key, which they won’t have.
Filestack also uses Transport Layer Security, otherwise known as TLS, to prevent malicious file upload problems and similar issues on an ongoing basis. TLS is an effective way to secure all communications between two points. It’s actually the successor to Secure Socket Layer or SSL and offers a more robust level of protection than that particular option.
Another essential part of our security offerings has to do with authentication. Both authentication and authorization against our APIs relies heavily on Base64URL-encoded JSON “policies” along with HMAC-SHA256 “signatures” that are built to determine which actions are authorized and which are not.
Robust access controls are also utilized by Filestack to help create the most secure file transfer possible. Depending on your preferences, you specify down to the user account who has access to what information and who doesn’t. You can also track someone else’s activity within the system on a granular level, giving you the visibility needed to determine why changes are being made and who is involved in that activity.
Finally, one of the most important ways that Filestack’s security solutions work hard to secure your web content has to do with the idea of network and data separation. Even if a cyber criminal were to gain access to the network, segmentation is in place (also sometimes called “zoning”) that will provide the controls necessary to limit their activities during intrusion. It’s an idea not to dissimilar to how businesses usually separate payment card authorizations from consumer Wi-Fi traffic. Even if the Wi-Fi network were compromised, that payment information would still be safe because it was never “there” to begin with. With network and data separation, Filestack affords the same level of security to everything you’ve already worked so hard to build.
Overall, the file upload security and other features inherent within Filestack are designed to guarantee protection at all times – whether a file is in transit or at rest doesn’t actually matter. This means not only secure file transfers in both directions, but secure file storage as well. As is true with our Virus Detection feature, Filestack has the ability to look directly into the file to make sure it is safe and that it isn’t infected with malicious content. If a rogue file is detected, we’ve also got the tools in place to do something about it before you even realize you have a problem at all.
Proactive Protection You Need for the Security You Deserve
All told, the most important thing to understand about all of this is that keeping your application safe is not something you “do once and forget about.” It’s also not as easy as flipping a proverbial light switch – there are several different layers involved to guarantee the robust protection you need, regardless of where you happen to be. At Filestack, thanks to our state-of-the-art security solutions that come inherent within the platform, we’re here for every single one of them.
